CNC Chip Conveyors — Scraper, Screw & Auger Types

For CNC lathes, especially heavy-duty models like the Clausing CB/CC/CK/CL Series, scraper-type or belt chip conveyors are most commonly used. They handle the long, stringy chips produced during turning operations most effectively. For smaller lathes generating fine chips, a screw or auger conveyor may be more appropriate depending on the workpiece material.

Yes. Most CNC chip conveyors are designed to manage both chips and coolant simultaneously. Coolant drains back through the conveyor body into a collection tank for filtration and recirculation. This is particularly important in through-spindle coolant systems, such as those found on FEMCO horizontal boring machines, where coolant volume is high.

Many new CNC machines include chip conveyors as standard or optional equipment. The Clausing CNC Lathe includes front and rear belt chip conveyors as standard, and both FEMCO BMC-110R1 and BMC-110R2 models include chip conveyors with purchase. For older or used machines, retrofit chip conveyor solutions are available to improve chip management without replacing the machine.

CNC chip conveyors are engineered to handle chips from a wide range of metals including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, brass, and titanium. The conveyor type selected should match the chip form produced by the material — for example, scraper types suit ferrous metals producing long chips, while auger types work better with fine, granular chips from cast iron or grinding operations.

Selection depends on the chip type (long/stringy vs. short/fine), material being machined, coolant usage, machine bed configuration, and production volume. Regular maintenance includes cleaning the conveyor belt or flights to prevent chip buildup, inspecting and lubricating drive chains or screws, checking the drive motor and gearbox for wear, and ensuring the coolant drain path is clear. Scraper conveyors may require periodic inspection of hinge pins and flight plates, while screw and auger types need the helical element checked for wear, especially when machining abrasive materials.
