Precision Grinding Machines — Finishing & Grinding Equipment

The three primary types of grinding machines are surface grinders, cylindrical grinders, and centerless grinders. Surface grinders — such as the Clausing CSG series — are used to produce flat, smooth surfaces on workpieces. Cylindrical grinders shape the outside of a rotating workpiece, while centerless grinders grind the exterior of a part without using centers or chucks for support.

Precision surface grinding uses a horizontal-spindle reciprocating table grinder to achieve very fine surface finishes and tight flatness tolerances — typically Ra 16–32 microinch or better. Blanchard grinding (rotary surface grinding) uses a vertical spindle and rotating magnetic chuck, removing stock faster but leaving a characteristic cross-hatch pattern with a coarser finish. Precision grinding is preferred when tight tolerances and smooth surfaces are critical.

Clausing CSG series surface grinders are available in a wide range of table sizes from 6" x 18" up to 20" x 40", accommodating everything from small tooling components to large industrial workpieces. The CSG3A1224, for example, features a 12" x 24" table with a maximum longitudinal hydraulic travel of 25.59" and cross travel of 12.2".

Manual surface grinders rely on operator-controlled handwheels for crossfeed and vertical adjustments, offering direct control suited for job shop and low-volume applications. Automatic models, such as Clausing's ASD series, feature a Delta PLC touch-screen controller with programmable head positioning, auto crossfeed, and auto lubrication — ideal for production environments requiring repeatable, high-throughput grinding cycles.

Clausing CSG series surface grinders require three-phase electrical power at 230 or 460 volts. Single-phase power is not supported natively, and facilities using other voltage standards will require an appropriate transformer. It is recommended to confirm your facility's electrical supply before ordering. Spindle motors range from 2 hp to 7.5 hp depending on the model selected.
