CBN (cubic boron nitride) is the premier abrasive for hardened tool steels, particularly those above 60 HRC. It maintains hardness at high temperatures and resists chemical reactions with ferrous materials. For lower-hardness tool steels, white aluminum oxide or pink aluminum oxide abrasives are cost-effective alternatives that provide a good surface finish with minimal workpiece heat damage.

For extremely hard materials such as hardened die steels, HSS, and carbide-tipped tooling, CBN and diamond grinding wheels are the optimal choices. CBN wheels are preferred for ferrous materials due to their chemical compatibility, while diamond wheels are better suited for non-ferrous hard materials like carbide.
